Costco to Open First GCC in India, Creating 1,000 Jobs in Hyderabad
U.S. retailer Costco Wholesale Corp is set to establish its first technology centre in India, with Hyderabad emerging as the chosen location, according to a report by Reuters. The Global Capability Centre (GCC) will focus on handling technology and research operations, working closely with global teams to drive innovation and growth.
The centre is expected to employ 1,000 people initially, with plans to scale up in the future. The GCC will handle technology and research operations, supporting the company’s global teams in various functions.
The news was first revealed in ANSR’s Fortune 500 GCC Report.
According to reports the location of this GCC is going to most probably be in the RMZ Spire T110 building in HITEC City. ANSR, India’s top GCC facilitator, is managing Costco’s GCC entry into Hyderabad. Costco India, Hyderabad has been registered with MCA.
According to AI Invest, “the company’s announcement of its first Global Capability Center (GCC) in Hyderabad, India, marks a calculated step into a market that has long been courted but rarely fully embraced by Western retailers. With an initial workforce of 1,000 employees and plans for rapid scaling, Costco’s GCC is not just a cost-saving measure — it’s a masterstroke in leveraging India’s evolving digital ecosystem to unlock long-term value in a US $300 billion global GCC market”.
India’s GCC market size is projected to grow to US $99 billion-US$105 billion by 2030 from US $64.6 billion in fiscal 2024, according to a report by IT industry body Nasscom and consulting firm Zinnov. The country’s strong talent pool, infrastructure, and government support make it an attractive destination for global companies looking to establish GCCs.
Several global companies, including JPMorgan Chase, Walmart, and Target, have already established GCC operations in India, with many located in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Other companies, such as McDonald’s, Heineken, and Vanguard Group, also have a presence in Hyderabad.
While Costco has not officially commented on the plans, the company’s decision to establish a technology centre in India reflects its growing interest in the country’s talent pool and GCC ecosystem. The move is expected to contribute to the growth of India’s GCC industry, which is becoming increasingly important for global companies looking to drive innovation and growth.
